really and honestly? you guys mean to tell me you never ever hit a guy with the intent to hurt him? i can remember vividly talking with team mates about taking guys out of the game. or are you guys the type that never played football and are just fans of the nfl game? i am willing to bet that there are more guys with head injuries and injuries in general due to steroids or other peds than a bounty system. but those guys get caught and only get a 4 game suspension... that is far worse to me than what vilma did.
In organized or pick-up games my intent was to make good plays. Only two times did I intend to actually hurt someone and those incidents were both in sandlot football games. One time a kid was running with the ball and when I attempted to tackle him he jabbed his hand in my face. A stiff arm to the face when you are not wearing a helmet is pretty bad. I pushed his hand out of my face and then tackled him and drove his face into the dirt. The next winter, in a snow game, I pushed the kid into a tree. There were several times I would have liked to do similar stuff when playing pick-up basketball. Often times there would be extra hard fouls due to there being no refs. Other times some dude would act like a jerk and travel on purpose or bounce a ball off someone's face. Luckily, nobody tried any of that garbage on me. This kind of stuff happens in unorganized sports. As for organized sports with coaches and refs, you'd have to be an asshole to try to injure someone. There is no place for it. In late March while I was banned here, I had a bunch of e-mails back and forth with a friend on the Saints bounty program. Here is an excerpt- If they go overboard with the tackling, then they will get fined from the league. The money they got from the Williams bounty system would be less than any league fine amount. In other words, the Saints players involved in the system were only trying to collect the money in the real flow of the game. I do not believe they were tackling opponents more forcefully than other teams were tackling. I expected 2 games for Payton and 6 for Williams. The fact that the league gave out stiffer penalties was surprising. I kind of liked it only because penalties tend to be too light in many walks of life. To reiterate my point or to make it more clear, I don't think the Saints players themselves caused extra harm on the field. My point is that coaches should not be involved in this bounty crap. It was cute in the late 80s with the Packers and then Buddy Ryan, but times have changed. With what we now know about brain injuries (we knew they were bad then, but now we really know and concussions are even worse than we had thought), to have coaches (authority figures) offer money to players who maim opponents is rough stuff. If Vilma and Harper want to make a side bet between themselves about knocking somebody out, fine. Nobody'll know if they keep it to themselves. But Spagnuolo and Vilma getting together? Nope. Not good.
good, make that piece of shit goodell show his cards. or his proof. this fucking control freak will be fighting tooth and nail to not relinquish anything.
Or it will make Vilma look even worse. Basically the league is trying in vain to protect the whistle blowers, and the NFLPA are not going to let that happen. Of course, the whistle blowers most likely are part of the NFLPA also... One thing is for certain. The guys who blew the whistle on this will be exposed, and NOBODY will ever want to speak up on this stuff again.
