Technically, you're right. But given the Jet offensive line's inability to establish the 'ground-and-pound' game against a supposed injury-ravaged GB defense (incl. a Jet waived NT), imho you've gotta play it straight up, especially considering it wasn't 4th and 5... Monday morning QB'ing aside, that was waaaay too many yards to gain when considering the risk/reward factor. On the opposite side of the 'special teams' ball, GB's punter did a great job in pinning the Jets down and giving the Jets the 'long field' .... so why not give GB the same 80 yard challenge? Besides, the Jet's "O" was playing "tight" in the 1st half. Make 'em go the length of the field.
Silly call that almost amazingly came off. He caught the ball at his 6 yard line and had to make it to the 38 for the first down. So he has to run 32 yards. 32 freakin yards!
bad call. but the story of the game was the shite play-calling. gb played great 'd' but there was certainly a way to score points. the jets oc just couldn't find it. poor.
I really don't think it was that big of a deal. He gained 17 yards still, and almost got a first. His average net punt has been 40 yards. It was a swing of only 23 yards. That's It!
Not to mention he's on the right hash and running to the near sideline, not a lot of room to roam around there and he eventually did run out of room. Rex intimated that Weatherford forgot we got sacked on third down and didn't know it was 18 yards, I hope that's not the case.
Punter shouldn't be able to make that call on 4th & 18. Especially, w/ the Jets so deep in their end of the field....However, Jets Offense put up zero points. If the Jets managed some points we'd be laughing @ how silly this call was but not being upset.
Talk about putting positive spin on it... He gave them the ball on our 37 and they got a FG in a game with practically NO scoring. When that is the only score of the game until the 4th qtr. its more than just a minor thing... 4th & 18 from his own 20. He receives the ball near the 10 and has to get to the 38 for a first down. DOH!
Really stupid comment. You're just overlooking where on the field this play occurred. If the Jets were @ midfield & blew it then you would actually be making sense. However, GB started the ball practically in FG range. Punter was within his own damn 10 yard line .... wtf 23 yards added to the field position would be huge in that situation.
I hope that is the case. A brain freeze is acceptable because everyone makes mistakes. Running that play with full knowledge scares me more..
The Jets coaching staff gave him the freedom to make that call, that decision lies squarely on their shoulders.
Plus he was punting into the wind so you have to imagine that the Packers don't really get the ball much further back then that. The only thing that prevented this from being a 1st was a good use of a challenge flag by McCarthy. We can point out how terrible the officials were but this was one they got wrong that nearly helped us.
I could be totally wrong about this, but at the time that decision was made we were around OUR 25 yrd line and we had just forced 3 straight 3 and outs, why give them the chance ??? Isn't our team built to play strong on defense and on O run the ball down their throats and wear them out? If he got it cool, but why even attempt it?
Some of you are such freakin crybabies. Who cares, they scored no points. You can't win scoring no points.
