We OWNED them in the first half and even the annoucers said that we were making a statment ... Yeah we let them back in, but 2 ... 14 Play ... 7:30+ minutes drives in the last 17 minutes of game time made a HUGE statement ... Our defense looked gassed by the 4th quarter, so what better way to help them out ... Keep them on the bench and watch our offense grind out 15+ minutes ...
Imo, part of the definition of being a Jet fan, a huge part, is never giving a flying F what anybody else thinks. I could care less what the retired jock gasbags say about the Jets. Sometimes, btw, they are right, but complaining about lack of respect, imo, is a different thing than the occasional fair assessment that points out a real shortcoming. I have no problem with the latter, and could not care less about respect. I'd rather the Jets not get the respect for two reasons. First is better to earn it at the begrudging hands of people I don't have much respect for, either, than to start out with it and fail to live up to it. Second is I think it makes the players more hungry, which this team should be. I think it fosters team unity, and a "we'll show em" attitude. But in the end, I really think the whole respect thing is something you can't really focus on when you are a Jet fan. It's not part of the whole dynamic. We don't get what makes us fans from those clowns. It has nothing to do with them. Who cares what they think? Learn this.
God, I am so with this statement... should be nominated for Post of the Year. I've been a Jets fan for so long, I don't think I could HANDLE respect. Screw that. I'd rather win the game and quietly keep on winning.
how many times have the Pats lost at home recently? A win there is a huge regardless of how it happened.
So, all you who feel so underwhelmed by this game ... how would you like to be a Patriot fan today? Here's what I saw: The offense and defense came in and pretty much had their way the first half, in the home the team that is their main competition, who beat them the 2nd week. For whatever reason, the game plan changed in the second half, it became all "prevent defense" and "don't hit on 16, Brett." What happened is exactly what you'd expect from going into that mindset with 30 minutes left. If anything it took longer for that lead to be squandered than I would have guessed. Then what I saw was the coaches saying "oh crap, 'prevent' on defense and 'play to not lose' ain't gonna work anymore now that it's a one score game." Then what I saw from the offense was an impressive ability to seemingly just flip the switch and get all cylinders firing again. The offense actually had three impressive drives at the end, not two. The non-scoring one (the first one) was cut short by the fumble after the catch. The defense seemed a bit gassed by then, but the offense just turned it on, when it was asked to turn it on. They only one they didn't get it done in the stretch (besides the fumble, and you can't help stuff like that) was when it seemed like the coaches asked them to go back into 'play not to lose' mode (like that possession right before the two minute warning). That was the only major letdown I saw in the last quarter of the game, Thomas Jones inability to get those final 2 yards to get the clinching first down. So, where you saw a team that could not put it away, I saw a team with an offense that scored on nearly every occasion where the coaches told them "ok open it up and get the score" and successfully took care of the ball every time the coaches seemed to emphasized doing that. The ability to turn that switch on, then off, then on again was actually impressive, IMO. I don't know how you could have asked them to do too much better. You can quibble about the game plan all you want, but IMO the offense at least did exactly what it was asked to do almost every time it touched the ball.
Thanks, but I sincerely meant it as a suggestion for what I take is the concern of younger fans about respect. Being a Jet fan means rising above such concerns. You don't need that. You're a Jet fan. F everybody else.
Man being a Patriots fan would be great. They've won 3 SBs recently, and even without their starting QB they're 6-4, and just barely lost 1st place, and have plenty of time to make it up. If we lose our starting QB, we go into the tank and win maybe 3-4 games that season. BB is a phenomenal coach that can win with apparently anybody.
I'm not sure why it would be so great? They haven't won a SB in years. The three they won are tainted with rumors and facts regarding cheating. They tried to buy one last year only to have the single biggest choke in SB history and they are clearly a talented team on the decline.
I wonder how much taint there really is. There's one thing I think we can all agree on though, especially us younger fans, I'd like to win one in my lifetime, hopefully soon. I just found out something really great for myself personally that I'd been waiting on since yesterday. So now I don't even care about the coaching problems, I'm happy we won and I'm happy for myself as well, I don't even want to talk about the coaching problems for today. I'm just really in good spirits right now!
Exactly. The ESPN talking heads don't factor in to the playoff formula. Division wins, on the other hand, go a long way. We've now beaten every division foe in their building with two home games left. That's what's called being in the driver's seat.
why do people worry about such insignificant things. who cares what people think or say. we are division leaders.
There's a very good chance that if we make the playoffs, we play the Pasties again. THAT will be the statement game.
First thing I read about game this morning on AOL was Cassell makes a statement. Un real.Nothing about the Jets till 3rd sentence
Found this thread again and just had to ask, why do all these people think it's the win OR respect? Can't we strive for both??? I think those who thought this was a great game for the Jets are reaching. A great win that puts us in good position, but not a great game because of how ugly it got for us. We nearly choked and won in large part due to the flip of a coin. Don't give me some BS about how the coaches this or that. Aren't the coaches part of the whole Jets package? If you think the coaches screwed up, then the end result is the Jets screwed up and let a hobbled Pats team back into a game they should of been soundly defeated in. I'm hoping for a Super Bowl too, but I don't have my head in the clouds like a few of you. Pointing out some bad plays or mistakes does not make someone a 'darksider'. Completely ignoring them makes one a fool. I illustrate my view in a slightly different manner in this post: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=1023851&postcount=69
The media works in exactly the same way as the Pro Bowl voting. Teams are good for a while before they start to get the media respect. Then they keep that respect for a while even after they've regressed. Both are completely meaningless barometers of a team's/player's strength.
