This is pretty much precisely how I feel. They over-achieved this year. Mangini got the most he could get out of the team and then some. We still need some more key bodies on the field to be a force.
They could ahve finished better and closed out games better. I am hoping that will be something we see next year. A little better during crunch time.
There's nothing in the Pennington years that suggests they'll close out games well. It's just not his forte. He builds good leads and then holds them when the Jets win. When the Jets are in close games going into the 4th quarter they really do not do that well. And that's been a characteristic of their offense for 4 years now.
1. D'Brick could've protected better 2. Blaylock/Barlow removed earlier 3. Defense could've played like Week 10 all yr
I would have liked to see more short screens to Brad Smith and Leon Washington. I think those guys are really dangerous in space and are almost always a threat to take it to the house.
If only we played Defense in the first half like we did in the second half, I think we could have beat the Browns and Colts. That would have made us 12-4 and given us a home game in the playoffs.
The Jets did exactly what a modestly talented team with a smart HC, Smart, mistake free QB and a weak schedule should do. The big plus of this season is we know we have a great young HC. The big minus, we need to rebuild a good chunk of this team to enter the realm of the elite teams with a shot at the big prize. To the positive it looks like we may have leadership with a plan to do it. We should have pushed the ball down field earlier in games to open up the running game a bit. It seemed like every game we started the first half with a series of 4 to 5 yard passes and just bottled up the line of scrimage.
Yep. Rebuilding is still in the offing, although we found some nice pieces (Cotchery, Thomas, Mangold, Ferguson, Washington, Nugent) this year. As to the playcalling, I really think the Jets did everything they could. Early in the season they opened things up and allowed Chad to fire away. A bit later on his arm began to wear down, first noticeably in the Jacksonville game and then again against Chicago, and the options just closed in on them. It's possible that his arm will be stronger next year after another offseason of recovery or it might not be. It's hard to think of it this way given his performance but Chad is probably one of the Jets real limiting factors at this point.
And that "cupcake schedule" was highlighted by the Oakland Raiders who owned the... wait what was their offensive rank?
Honestly they exceeded my expectations and made me extremely happy, what could they have done better? I think they only thing they could have done better was finish. I get tired of watching them build leads against bad teams and allow them to get back into the game when we should be getting our younger guys experience.
The Jets ranked 13th in offensive plays run. They ranked 19th in first downs. They ranked 4th in 3rd down % and 7th in 3rd down attempts. They ranked 3rd in fewest offensive penalties and 2nd in fewest offensive penalty yards. They ranked 9th in time of possession. They ranked 18th in points scored. How you can take the ONE stat, yards per game, that they were ranked as low as 26th in and turn that into their offensive ranking is beyond me. The default listing for team offense is yards per game. That's the only reason you got confused and decided they were "the 26th ranked offense." I make the Jets out as about the 17th overall offense, given their 18th ranking in total points and their 16th rank in net yards (YPG - Offensive Penalty Yards Per Game.) Of course I had to actually look at all the numbers and do a *little* bit of analysis to explain this, not just have a knee jerk reaction to a table sorted on just one column.
NOT TOO MUCH!!! Seriously, would have been nice to see the D play in the 1st half of the season like they did in the 2nd half, but considering all of the change its understandable.
And their OC is getting interviewed for a prime HC job. Which should tell you how much rankings matter, particularly after the Colts defense pushed the Ravens around yesterday. Watch the game with your eyes and your brain and not someone else's stat sheet.
The one thing we do know is Mangini and Tannenbaum knows what needs to improve next year and most likely are working on it as we post..No vacation time or speaking engagements..Just improve the New York Jets
