He has missed a lot of playing time. Let's let things play out next year and see not only if he can stay on the field but how he gels with the other pieces we bring in.
I definitely agree with your second statement. I'm curious...What approach do you think Idzik should be using for talent development and evaluation???
agree with most and wouldn't mind seeing kerley signed for another 3 years. coming off an injury marred season he would probably do it. i stated earlier, too many other holes to have to worry about slot wr too.
I agree with you regarding the "projects" and too many of those haven't developed. Hopefully, with Idzik and his new scouting/personnel personnel, they'll do a better job of identifying OL talent in the draft and in FA. I definitely would not have a problem with Idzik signing 2-3 OL FAs during the offseason, and in fact, hope that he will sign at least 1 or 2 OL. I think they'd be hard pressed to find a quality LT signing backups off of other teams rosters or practice squads. Sooner or later, they're gonna have to bite the bullet and use their #1 or #2 pick and replace Brick.
All indications were that he was the most improved player on the team during training camp, so I don't know where your expectations came from. I understand that you are not big on projects (I'm not either), but when a guy has the physical gifts of Hill and is on a cheap rookie contract, there is really no reason to give up on him. My fear is that when he does reach his full potential, if he does, it will be too late, the Jets will cut him and he will end up playing, and playing well, for another team. Another team that can utilize him to the best of his abilities like the Saints. WR stay: Kerley, Hill, Nelson RB stay: Ivory, Powell TE stay: Cumberland and only because he can run a solid seam route We really need to beef up our guard spots because they have been absolutely terrible this year and I refuse to believe that Mangold and Brick have regressed this far in one season. I think it has more to do with them having to cover for the other guys. Howard is a solid starter and should stay at least to fight for his spot.
LT may be the exception. Some have placed the importance of a good LT right behind a good QB. But guards? There are so many good young guards being developed on other teams that have not cracked into the starting lineup (yet) that can be stolen. Grabbing a young guard off someone elses team that has shown promise and is developing nicely puts you light years ahead of drafting a Peterman or Vlad the Impaler and hoping they show something by year 3. And if you can steal someone like Faneca or Mawia every 5 or so years, that's even better.
Ivory,Powell,Kerley,Cumberland. Everyone else is as good as dead.Holmes cant be traded no one whats that huge injury prone contract. If theres a way to cut him without serious cap ramifactions hes likley done. The Stephen Hill project has been a unmidigated disaster but he may hold some value in a 6 th rounder, Id take it in a heart beat.Winslow is worthless.Gates is the worst WR in the league .Nelson is decent for depth but we can do better.Cribbs carrer ended with that injury .Salas is the king of the practice squad where hell be sent back to.So there you have it folks 4 players worth keeping
Only skill players I'd like to see return are: Kerley, Ivory & Cribbs. If anyone else from this year's roster makes the 2014 team it's gonna be a big FAIL on Idzik's part (unless it's 2nd or 3rd stringer).
QB: Geno stays with the team unless a QB is drafted in the first round. Geno should be traded if the Jets take a QB in round one. Someone will definitely take him. His role is still to be determined next year though. Keep Simms around if possible. He has potential, but he isn't there yet. RB: The only one I'd keep is Powell. I like what he brings. He was doing great until MM decided to have Powell and Ivory split carries. Ivory will stay because of his contract and what was given up in the trade for him. I'm not his biggest fan, but he is serviceable. Goodson seems like a good change of pace RB, but he might be in jail. His contract was good on the surface, but looks awful now because of his legal trouble. If the Jets can get out of his contract because of his legal trouble, they shouldn't hesitate. Bohanon hasn't stood out, but he is only a rookie and was very highly rated coming out of college. Keep him for at least one more season. WR: Holmes is a goner. I'll be happy to never see that guy's face again. Complete cancer to the locker room. Hill will be back. I think he has been a victim of the bad QB play the last two years. He has his problems(body catcher and drops a lot of passes), but he is still a great vertical threat. The Jets just haven't had anyone to throw him the deep ball during his time with the Jets. Kerley is very important to the team. He will be back. Might be a good idea to give him an extension in the offseason, so he doesn't hit free agency after the 2014 season. I'd cut Salas and Nelson. If the Jets really need a wide receiver next summer, sign one of the two. Both are good possession receivers. TE: Winslow won't be back. Cumberland will be back and will be the starter next season. Idzik should keep Sudfeld. He has a ton of potential and looks okay right now. Reuland won't be back.
1. In terms of the player quality: Kerley (WR), Ivory/Powell(RB), Bohanon (FB) 2. As a project: Hill(WR), Cumberland/Sudfeld (TE) <- Too many projects. Not good. 3. Position coaches: I'd say Jets need better coaches for TE (Steve Hagen), WR (Sanjay Lal). Anthony Lynn looks pretty good as the RB coach actually.
Bring the rookies along in practice, ease them into game time slowly, and don't be afraid to bench a young guy if he is not up to starting yet. Let them observe the more experienced players until they start to learn from their mistakes and then put them back in there instead of letting them get killed over and over again.
I would keep David Nelson for TC competition as well, see if Stephen Hill can elevate his game above his.
That's it for me. Get these guys where they should be - down the depth chart behind people who can really contribute and then let them battle each other for which ones stick on the roster as role players and backups. Cumberland, Sudfeld, Hill, Salas and Nelson can't be guaranteed roster spots, much less options for starting roles. Kerley and the RBs stay as they are, they aren't a huge weaknes even if they aren't a great strength so we focus on the areas that really need it (though Goodson may need replacing with similar skill-set guy for obvious reasons). Oh, and get viable vet QB. He doesn't have to be great, even if he's just a place holder until Geno or whoever is ready to go.
If Stephen Hill and David Nelson are integral parts of this offence next year we have a problem. Nelson is garbage.
Lol i know.Id keep Nelson as 6th Or 7 th WR for depth but we can do much better then both him and Hill
