I don't think that having a team with little or no expectations is a reason to potentially ruin a rookie QB, but then neither is a team "built to win now." Since QB is THE most important position on the team, and there so few really good ones in the NFL, I think that one should be extremely cautious and careful with young QBs. You have to look at each individual based on his physical, emotional and mental makeup, and where his tools or skill set lies at this point in his development. If he is coming from an offense that is nothing like a pro-type offense, then he may need to sit for a while. If he has fundamental issues with his throwing motion, making his progressions, reading Ds, footwork & drop backs, taking snaps from under center, has confidence issues, hasn't adjusted to the speed of the NFL, if he's having to think too much, or is not ready to see the field in anyway, then he needs to sit. There are very few QBs (the "can't miss" type QBs who started and played at a very high level for 3-4 years at a big time football program with topflight competition, who have solid fundamentals, lots of confidence and strong arms, or "once in a generation" types) who can not only survive but maybe even thrive being thrown to the wolves their rookie seasons.
how long has it been? i'm on day 53 myself. it's been tough, and I didn't think i'd make it this far, but i'm still fighting the fight. you can get through it. first 2-3 weeks are definitely the toughest. do whatever you have to get thru that part. after that, it's really about re-training your mind to do things without smoking..... taking long drives, going out to eat, leaving work, at beach, drinking........it's been well over 20 years for me of smoking (not heavy amts tho), and it feels weird doing those things without it. like somethings always missing. i think i'm one of those people who will always crave it to a degree. Find your motivation, and keep drilling into your head why you are doing this. for me it was all about health. i'm a very healthy and active person outside of smoking, and i want to keep it that way. this last year was the first time i saw any adverse affects from smoking, and it was enough to worry me about what could come if i didn't stop now.
Congrats, BacktoQueens! You sound strong. Good. Life is too precious to throw it away smoking. One day at a time.
True. I agree. I'm just saying, we gotta go by what we know, and right now we have the pieces to be a playoff contender and a rook at helm can hold us back as he goes through his growing pains. It's perfect IMO for a rook QB in Petty's situation, learn how to win by watching and training with a winning team.
Come on, lets keep this real. Those wins were a group effort and some luck. If he was so great, where are the rings to show for it? Manning and Brady have rings. Sancho has nothing but the butt fumble, end of discussion. Just like McMahon help the Bears win a ring in 85 right? he didn't. That was also a team effort.
Nothing wrong with it if he can play. If Andrew Luck were starting here I'd never complain. What I don't like is when guys who can't play and the words franchise quarterback are mentioned in the same sentence only because of where they were drafted. Oh that's just growing pains really? Growing pains or signs the guy just flat out stinks?
How many rings does he have? Nobody ever remembers QB's who lost Super Bowl games. You think people will remember a 2-time losing QB in Conference Championship games?
I hear it takes a year for your brain to reprogram the fact that you are a non-smoker. My motivation is to run at Holmdel Park in NJ faster then what I did back in high school. 3 mile course, I ran it in like 16 mins in HS. About 5 and a half minutes a mile... long ways to go ... Keep it up bro! I lost count of how many days ... I think it bothered me inside that I kept track on how many days, it kept reminding myself that I was once a smoker.
it does take a year. i'm 18 months into quitting and i still check my pockets for a lighter every now and then, and i am always smoking in my dreams. exorcise is the best thing to help the cravings.. i did push ups every time i would normally smoke a cigarette for the first few months. really helped good luck and stay strong
Congrats, flajetfan! That's something to be proud of. I know from my dad and friends how hard it is to quit. You must have gotten in great shape from all the pushups! LOL
I was 5-1/2 weeks in.....went on a business trip with colleagues who smoked, bummed one while out at a bar, a week later I was back to smoking. Sucks. Learned my lesson. Gotta start from scratch. No such thing as 'just one'.
Maybe if it was a rookie that started 3-4 years of college a la Russel Wilson, or Luck. But the rookies we've been starting clearly haven't been ready. Sanchez - one year as a starter in college and Pete Carroll rightly said (and was roasted for it) he wasn't ready yet. Geno had two years as a starter in that dopey Air Raid offense that's nothing like an NFL system. They weren't ready. Petty sure as shooting isn't ready.
i've been dying to hit up 'just one'. but i agree, there is no such thing. thx for the reminder. find what motivates you, shake it off and get back to it. you went 5-1/2 weeks, so you already know how to get thru the hard part. you've proven that. now you just need to figure out how to make it a permanent lifestyle change. that's what i'm currently trying to figure out as well..
the dreams are funny. i've had such vivid dreams of smoking on my back patio......and enjoying it! actually thought i had cheated the next day until i realized it was only a dream. agree the exercise is key. i'm doing 6 days a week to take my mind off it and curb the weight gain. strength training, beach vball, cardio, long dog walks (dog is happy).. how long did you smoke? u still miss it at 18months?
RG3 was drafted high because of his special arm and his legs. He can be elite in the right offense but he lacks some of the fundamentals they teach you in high school as far as being a traditional QB. He didn't have to change much or adjust his game when he entered the NFL, Shanahan built the offense around him and allowed him to play the way he played and dominated in college. Now you see his struggles as a pocket passer, he struggles with his reads, he can't get rid of the ball, he gets confused. There's no reason to hold a rookie back just for the sake of not playing him. If Petty shows that he can handle it right now he should be playing, if not let him sit. One thing you need is a decent O-Line, if you don't have that you I almost wouldn't care how good or pro ready the rookie QB is, I'd not put him out there.
22 years,up to 2 packs a day at the heaviest. i don't miss it but sometimes muscle memory takes over and i think i should have a lighter or a pack in my pocket, . summer is defintitely the hardest time, bbqs and beer are big tempters. also you find yourself in scenarios where you would naturally light up. those urges come and go quickly though. you are 2 months in now? that's good. the hardest part is over. congratulations and good luck keeping it up through the season. the jets have sent my counter back to 0 on a few occasions
Wow. You guys who are quitting smoking have my utmost respect. I know how addictive nicotine is and learned about most of the triggers from my dad and friends/colleagues who smoke or who have quit. The mind is a powerful thing, however, and we can do about anything we set our minds to if we believe we can do it. Muscle memory and habit are powerful, but the mind and will are stronger.
