Hackenberg looks like a deer in headlights and Petty is laid up. I'd let McCown start until Petty is healthy and then evaluate how things are going with McCown. Boring as shit but that's the best you can hope for with this dreadful season on the way.
Ok sports fans, the Vote Tally post Snoopy Bowl and before Pettys MRI: Mcown: 18 Hack: 16 Petty: 28 So 6 additional votes each for McCown and Petty. People who want Hack to be the opening day starter (masochists) were unchanged at 16.
Well, this certainly cleared things up ... "Petty had the strongest showing this week, but is headed for an MRI on Sunday. Hackenberg was quite bad early, then rebounded late against lesser opponents. Josh McCown didn't see the field. Where this is headed, no one knows."
Does anyone think there is any chance the Jets roll with Petty on opening day? I really don't want to see McCown
Under normal circumstances, I'd be screaming that Petty should start, but with the way Bowles has handled the OL and the crappy way they're playing, I don't want to see him get killed. At this point, I'd rather they start McCown, give the OL time to get their mess together, and hopefully give the RBs, WRs and TEs a chance to get going. Petty could start by game 5.
since babe parilli is not available, the braintrust will go with mccown. they called brett favre, but his wife tore the phone out of his hands and hung up!
For a fourth round pick in 2015, Petty is about as good as it gets in what you could hope for from a development situation. He looks like he could be a starter in this league, he's had problems identifying blitzes, but maybe he's learned from his mistakes. His biggest blemish seems to me that he gets hurt a lot... I'd tend to agree start him in week 5 or 6 and take it from there.
I was rooting for Hack to win the job, but he clearly is not ready yet. You need to give it to Petty and hope he builds off his experience from last year before the injury. Starting McCown would be pointless, so I hope we don't go that route.
Petty if he's ready, Hack if not McCown does nothing for us taking snaps. Probably a better chance we win with him but it doesnt seem like that's the goal this season
If we pick up a lot of OL on waivers then I'd advocate McCown as starter to whip them into shape and give him a 4-5 game window, with BP as back-up. If/When we're not at .500 or better then I switch to BP/McCown and evaluate Petty into the bye week. If he's balling then I ride him down the stretch with Hack ready to come in for any garbage time duties and perhaps think of going to hack as starter for the last 3 weeks. If he's Fitz/McCown level future back-up then I say 'F-it!' and release the Hack, hoping he's ready to go through his progressions etc...
Brian Costello of the Post just did an identical vote today via Twitter. Over 2,300 votes: Petty: 53% McCown:32% Hack: 14% Bowles must be in absolute misery.
That's the right move. Petty should be the next man up if/once McCown falters or gets injured. I'd even rest Petty this week, get McCown a couple series and give Hack more game experience.
As expected. The real question is who's going to be the backup and who's going to be inactive. On merit Petty should be the backup, but since when has merit mattered for the Jets?
