I got no beef with Kendall trying to get all he can when he can. Thats pretty much what all of us wants, isn't it? Its not like he's ever going to have more leverage, I think its pretty smart of him to use it when he's got it. Given the shelf life of lineman and how fucked up they seem to be once they retire, I'd be looking for all I can get now too, if I were him, fuck his contract, its not like the Jets plan on honoring these all the way through when they are signed. Which doesn't mean the Jets will or should give it to him, but to call him a whiny bitch who should shut up and honor his contract when we all know management doesn't apply those rules to itself is ignorant, in my opinion. This'll be a good test for Mangini and Tannebaum, how they handle this. My guess is they'll restructure it modestly to make him look like he's saved face. I can't see them cutting him, he knows too much of the offense and would be very valuable to a rival.
Alot of people wanted an upgrade at guard via the draft. Many felt that Moore's spot was the more logical replacement due to the fact that most teams prefer to run to the right side, and as stated in the post you retrieved, what we really needed was an anchor for the running game who could control things at the point of attack. However there were afew people stating outwardly that Kendall needed to go, admitedly I never stated that, and it took this whole situation, as well as the drafting of Bender to transpire to come to that conclussion, but many were maintaining we needed help at both guard spots. W/ that said (And I may not be on the record regarding it) but I feel at this stage Kendall offers less physically than Moore does. Moore maybe average and can commit some costly penalties, but he doesnt get pushed around or constantly beaten on swim moves like Kendall often does. From the second this whole holdout situation developed about a month ago...I have stated that we'd be better off letting Kendall walk, as he is not worth paying anymore, is a weak link along the line, and this would be an excuse to promote more competition(always good in TC/preseason) along the OL which would likely result in
Kendall's apparent decline has been a topic of discussion for quite awhile now, going back to when he failed to adequately replace Mawae after he went down. There were a fair number of people looking to replace him if the right guy was drafted in the 1st or 2nd round this year. Then we got fancy and left the o-line alone on day 1.
Screw Kendall. Let him sit the season out, wasting away on the sidelines. If he starts talking, fine the hell out of him. You can't trade him or release him either because that sends the same message. Look, he signed the contract, now he has to deal with it. He's probably worth 10-20 million now anyway, he should stop being so GD greedy and just suck it up and deal with the fact that he's only going to make 1.x million this year. Poor guy.
So . . . Roughly his salary for this season? Which he'll also lose through fines? This should be priceless.
My issue is just protection...if they were so down on this guy, then draft a replacement before giving away all your picks or sign a FA guard who's comparable. Maybe the 6th rounder steps in and does the job, I hope so. But if Kendall goes and the protection falls apart, who's fault is that? Frankly, the only guy I'd really like to hear from on this issue is the one guy who was in the best position to evaluate him last season; the same guy who will be the most affected by his absence this season -- Pennington. I think we'd get an honest answer from Chad.
No Mangini is not asking for his contract ot be redone. Than was in response to another poster who thought that Mangini should get his contract renegotiated because of our record last year. To your ponit about a +6 turn around, yes the Jets surporised many, but if I am not mistaken the Jets were suffered a few major injuries in that 4-12 year including the starting and second string qb, the starting center, C-Mart and a couple of others. Going into that season were hardly a 4-12 team at least not on paper. Any team that is forced to go to his 3rd stringer is probably looking at a losing season. All I am saying is I am not going to anoint this guy a savior or call him a genuis after one year. This season we have a far more difficult schedule lets see how this year goes.. On your last point about Kendall, I could not agree with you more...
