Cappy, just stop feeding the troll, Don is a carbon copy of Raiderjoe. He posts just to get a rise out of us.
I don't think that anyone aside from the most optimistic fans think that Melancon is the closer of the future. He's 25 years old, hasn't been able to stick in the majors despite several opportunities, and right now he can't throw strikes at any level. I like him because he can legitimately throw 3 pitches, but it doesn't matter if he can't throw them for strikes. Hopefully he turns himself around and sticks in Houston. The buyout is $2 million, but if I'm not mistaken it's included in the $7 million figure that the media's been throwing around. Not certain on that though. I did forget about the possibility of Berkman vetoing better trades, that makes sense. But still, I'm surprised that there wasn't a bigger market for his services. No, Berkman is certainly not the same player that he was five years ago. But he's a veteran power hitter who is only going to cost you $3-5 million and a mediocre prospect; seems like a great alternative for teams like the Yankees, Rays, White Sox, and others who want a bat but don't want to give up 2 elite prospects for Dunn or Scott.
Yankees closing in on deal with Indians for Kerry Wood; Indians would eat a lot of salary. http://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN
I guess Wood is OK as long as nothing we'll be missing goes the other way. He's probably the 5th best guy in the bullpen though (behind Mo, Robertson, Marte and Joba in that order.)
It's for a PTBNL... Which means its not going to be anyone important. And the Indians are eating most of the contract. Whatever Wood is, he's likely to be better than Park has been.
Heyman said the same thing on MLB Network. Give Cashman credit for being aggressive and making some moves at the deadline without giving away much of anything. 3 moves, all low risk high reward--I approve.
Hahahaha! I like the Wood acquisition mainly because we DFA'd Chan Ho Park. Addition by subtraction. We'll see about Kerry Wood, he's been less than stellar this season.
