One of the best decisions of my life was going to yankee stadium last night, even though the crowd was kind of lame at one point, it still was a great experience
I'm not worried about AJ or Andy pitching on short rest. I'm sure they can do fine. But I'd prefer a better matchup. Here's the current setup: Game 5 - AJ (short rest) vs. Lee (full rest) -- advantage: slightly to moderately in Philly's favor Game 6 - Andy (short rest) vs. Pedro (fully rest) -- advantage: slightly to Yankees? Even? I don't know. Start Gaudin tonight, and you have this: Game 5 - Gaudin vs. Lee - advantage: strongly Philly Game 6 - AJ (full rest) vs. Pedro - advantage: Yankees The Yanks only need one game. Set yourself up to win that one. Who knows, maybe the Yanks get lucky and get to Lee and win with Gaudin anyway. But there's a good chance the Yanks could waste a nice start by AJ because Lee mowed 'em down again, and now we're looking at less favorable matchups and everyone on short rest for the completion of the series.
You never just give a game away in the playoffs to set up another matchup down the line. And make no mistake, starting Gaudin on the road in the World Series would be giving the game away--good pitchers often struggle to pitch effectively after 1 or 2 days of extra rest. Gaudin has thrown exactly 1 inning since October 3rd. You are asking for disaster if you put him on the mound. Burnett pitched beautifully in game 2. He's proven on a number of occasions that he can go on short rest with no problem. Besides, Sabathia is starting a potential game 7 no matter what. So your decision basically boils down to not starting Pettitte on 3 days rest in order to start Gaudin on 29 days rest. It just doesn't make sense. Ride the horses that got us here. Give AJ the ball.
Yes there is. That's the whole point! This is similar to the argument of whether to start CC in Game 6 of the ALCS, except that there's no series following this one. The Marlins faced this conundrum in the World Series with Beckett.
All this Lee stuff cracks me up, like he's unbeatable, extend him, make him throw alot of pitches and there bullpen sucks...
I dont understand this talk about Lee being the greatest pitcher ever...People are making him look like Koufax
he has been pretty untouchable all post season. I fail to see how judging a man by how he actually performs is laughable. in fact, attempting to dismiss how well he's pitched is what is laughable. that doesn't mean he will be aces tonight, just that he has been up to this point.
I agree that's why I said make him pitch to get to the bullpen, there's no doubt he's been lights out in the playoffs, but, sabathia gave up 3 runs yesterday, maybe he gives up 3 today and they lose 3-2...
Here's the thing. Short rest matters when there are going to be more games later down the line. As of right now, there isn't a single starter on the Yankees' staff that is going to make more than one more start. At this point, the issue of how tired any particular guy is going to be is pretty small. These are professional athletes who've pitched all year, with a real goal right in front of them. They'll be trading in a throw day for a start. Big deal. If they can't handle it, they don't deserve to win. Lee is fantastic. There is no question he's the best pitcher in MLB at this very moment. But Burnett pitched pretty damned fantastic his last outing too. I'd bet that both teams are thinking right now "Whoever scores first will win tonight." The Phillies only advantage tonight is that they may avoid their bullpen, whereas the Yankees will most likely use theirs. Then again, last night that bullpen looked pretty good for the most part. And if the Yankees use some patience tonight, Lee will eventually get chased.
Seriously, why did the Phillie start this guy? Did they read his history vs. the Yankees? He actually did pretty good compared to his past. Girardi would not have let him pitch if he was the manager. His big binder of pitching info would not allow it!
I agree. I wish Alio was right, but I was still a little bummed after winning Game 4 of the World Series last night. Thats how upsetting the Jets can be.
I'll repost what I posted yesterday for those who are interested and in need: If you hate Tim McCarver as much as I do... Here's a great solution. If you have a portable AM radio, hook up a male to male audio cable from the headphone jack of your radio to your computer's microphone jack. Download this program. http://www.daansystems.com/freestuff/Radiodelay.exe Tune the radio to 880AM then just fiddle with the settings to get the proper delay in the radio audio so that you can sync it with the TV. The sound will come out of your computer speakers delayed by however many seconds that you set it. Problem solved. I'd prefer to listen to Sterling give the call tonight than Joe Buck.
