Who knows if he would've been put on the DL? No way to answer that one. What's to prevent a team from pretending its Game 6 starter strained his shoulder, so they can get another reliever for Game 7? Or a Game 5 starter who you wouldn't want to use again. The problem is more with pitchers, but I do find it odd that Melky was replaced even though he's jumping around like crazy. Must not hurt much.
yeah, I was thinking about it earlier in the series, when someone somewhere mentioned something about Burnett in an NL park. The lineup is already weakened without Matsui, and then you have Molina instead of Posada. On top of that, Gardner instead of Melky, which wouldn't be bad against a righty, but is bad against a lefty.
