The New York Jets opened preseason in Houston last night, losing to the Texans, 20-16. The first team offense was on the field for only two series, while the starting defense played for the entire first quarter. QB Mark Sanchez, who did not have WR Plaxico Burress to throw to, completed 6 of 7 passes for 43 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT. WR Santonio Holmes caught both passes thrown to him for a total of 17 yards. Recently signed WR Derrick Mason seemed to have already blended into the offense - 3 receptions for 21 yards. RB Shonn Greene had 5 carries for 32 yards, including a 19-yard run.

It's Jets vs. Texans For Asomugha

It looks like it's the Jets vs. the Texans in the battle to sign CB Nnamdi Asomugha. There are several reports that Houston is going all-out to land the top prize of this year's free agency. They are offering Asomugha a contract with an average of $12-14M a year, which is more than the Jets are paying CB Darrelle Revis. The Gang Green are about $10M under the salary cap and it might be problematic to match or beat Houston's offer.

The Rex Ryan/Mark Sanchez era has begun with a stunning display on both defense and offense, as the Gang Green dominated the Houston Texans, 24-7. QB Mark Sanchez, who finished the game 18 of 31, 272 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, became the first Jets' rookie quarterback to win a game since Richard Todd did it in 1976. Rex Ryan's revamped defense played as advertised, limiting Houston to just 181 total yards.

The Jets defense looked exactly the way it had been advertised in the first half against the Houston Texans. Bart Scott and Co. completely dominated the 3rd best offense, limiting them to just 104 yards and 5 first downs. Constant pressure, gang tackling and aggressive playcalling seemed to catch the Texans off guard, as their offensive stars were almost completely shut down in the first half. All Pro WR Andre Johnson was limited to just one catch for 7 yards.

The New York Jets will open their season tomorrow when they take on the Houston Texans, a team that hasn't had a winning season in their seven years in the NFL. The Texans, however, finished 8-8 in both of the last two seasons and are projected to finally have a breakthrough season with a possible playoff berth. The Jets go into the game as 5-point underdogs, as they will face a formidable opponent who has won their last 3 home games and is 12-4 in home games over the last two seasons. Last season the Texans were ranked 3rd in total offense (4th in passing, 4th in rushing).

The new era in the history of the New York Jets will begin on Sunday when rookie head coach Rex Ryan and rookie QB Mark Sanchez will lead the team against the Houston Texans. The Gang Green are 4.5 to 5 point underdogs, facing a team that's expected to make the playoffs for the first time in their history. Ryan is one of nine rookie head coaches this season. Mark Sanchez will become the first Jets rookie quarterback to start since Matt Robinson started on November 13, 1977 against the Seattle Seahawks. The New York Jets have gone 491 consecutive games without starting a rookie quarterback, the longest current streak in the NFL. Robinson started just one game in 1977 - a 20-23 loss to the Steelers where he went 7 of 19 for 80 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT.
