Training Camp

Saturday morning practice session

Admin - July 26, 2008

It was hot and humid this morning at Hofstra University, as the New York Jets took the field for their fourth training camp practice. The practice session lasted 2 hours and this time it was QB Kellen Clemens taking reps with the first team.

Clemens did not look sharp, throwing quite a few passes badly off target and fumbling a snap. He improved as the session progressed, completing a few short and medium range passes to WR Laveranues Coles. One of his last throws, however, got deflected off Coles' hands and right into the hands of CB David Barrett. QB Chad Pennington looked better, but also threw at least one pass badly off target. Rookie QB Erik Ainge completed a nice deep pass to WR Wallace Wright who easily beat CB Andre Woolfolk. Wright, along with Coles, stood out among wide receivers, catching basically everything thrown in their direction. Rookie TE Dustin Keller also caught a few short passes. RB Thomas Jones broke a long run and also had a few other decent carries. RB Leon Washington also looked good. WR Jerricho Cotchery had a relatively quiet practice, but did have a nice gain on a reverse.

On the defensive side, offseason acquisition LB Calvin Pace showed good speed on the outside pressuring the quarterback. LB Eric Barton recovered Clemens' fumble, while DE Shaun Ellis looked good stopping the run. CB Justin Miller, who missed most of last season due to an injury, struggled in coverage, especially when he was one on one against Coles. Both stars of the Jets secondary, CB Darrelle Revis and S Kerry Rhodes, looked good in pass coverage. Recently signed first round pick DE/LB Vernon Gholston participated in the session but did not stand out.

After the session was over C Nick Mangold, OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, P Ben Graham and OL Jacob Bender spent some time signing autographs for kids.

The Gang Green will take the field again at 5:45pm et.
