Jets Preseason

Jets end preseason with win over Eagles

Admin - September 3, 2009

The New York Jets defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the final preseason game of the year, 38-27. The starters played only one series and while the offense impressed with a touchdown drive, the defense clearly struggled as they gave up six points. QB Mark Sanchez was a perfect 5 of 5 for 67 yards and a touchdown to WR Jerricho Cotchery. Keep in mind though that this was against a "vanilla" defense, which wasn't as aggressive as if this was a regular season game.

Both starting cornerbacks, Darrelle Revis and Lito Sheppard, were called for defensive pass interference. This was Sheppard's third interference penalty in last 2 games. LB Vernon Gholston finally recorded his first sack in the NFL. Hopefully, he'll get a confidence boost from this game and carry it to regular season.

RB Danny Woodhead made a strong case for making the team tonight, as he gained 158 yards on 18 carries, 2 touchdowns. The Jets are expected to go with five backs, but it would difficult to leave Woodhead out, considering tonight's game and his return abilities.

WR David Clowney rebounded following a catchless game against the Giants. Clowney caught both passes thrown to him, including a 73-yard one for a touchdown.

If someone clearly nullified any chance of making the team after this game, it's TE Jack Simmons. He caught just 3 of 6 passes thrown to him and dropped a sure touchdown in the end zone.

WR Britt Davis is another played who failed to impress. The early camp favorite is now most likely on his way to the waiver wire. WR Wallace Wright made a crucial mistake that resulted in an interception and led to a Philadelphia touchdown. His special team contribution, however, will most likely keep him on the roster.

WR Aundrae Allison also made a strong case tonight. He averaged 27 yards on 3 kickoff returns and also caught one pass for 10 yards.

CB Dwight Lowery rebounded, following a string of dreadful performances. Lowery had an interception and averaged 22 yards on 2 punt returns.

DT Howard Green also had a solid game - a sack and a fumble recovery.

P Reggie Hodges failed to impress again averaging only 37.8 yards on 4 punts.

The Jets currently have 75 players on their roster and will have to trim it down to 55 by 4PM EST on Saturday. They will be given two extra roster spots due to the upcoming suspensions of DE Shaun Ellis and LB Calvin Pace.
