Jets Player Release

Jets release two QBs to create more cap room

Admin - July 29, 2011

The New York Jets released two quarterbacks earlier this morning - QB Mark Brunell and QB Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell was scheduled to make $480K this year. Brunell was due to make $1.25M this season. Brunell is expected to be signed back once the situation with CB Nnamdi Asomugha is resolved. By cutting Brunell now the Gang Green will save about $250K.

Brunell, 40, is a 19-year veteran who was signed last season to back up QB Mark Sanchez after it became quite obvious that QB Kellen Clemens just wasn't reliable enough. Clemens signed with the Redskins a few days ago.

O'Connell, 26, spent last year on the injured reserve list and never played a down for the Jets in regular season.

Meanwhile, the Jets continue waiting for a decision from Nnamdi Asomugha, their #1 free agent priority at this point. The Gang Green are considered to be in the lead to acquire his services.

The Gang Green also waived CB Will Billingsley and OG Marlon Davis.

UPDATE: According to the latest report, the 49ers are out of the Asomugha race.
