Jets Regular Season

Westerman wins starting job back

Admin - December 8, 2011

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine announced that LB Jamaal Westerman will replace LB Garrett McIntyre as the starting outside linebacker in the base defense. The battle for this position has been going on since LB Bryan Thomas was lost for the season in Week 4. Westerman started in Week 6 against the Dolphins but then lost the job to LB Josh Mauga who started in Week 7. McIntyre started in the last three games.

Last week Westerman replaced McIntyre early in the game and made an immediate impact, recording a sack and two tackles for loss. The Jets have used LB Aaron Maybin, who leads the team with 6.0 sacks, in pass-rushing situations but preferred others against the run.

Meanwhile, OG Brandon Moore missed practice again due to a hip injury. Rex Ryan, however, stated that he expects Moore to play against the Kansas City Chiefs.

DT Mike DeVito (knee) was doing some light drills on the sideline. According to Rex, DeVito is "very doubtful" for Sunday's game.
