Can the Jets draft picks improve them from last season?

It is probably fair to say that the 2018 NFL season for New York Jets fans was not the best they have ever seen. Finishing bottom of the AFC East table, they picked up just 4 wins and sank to 12 losses. However, it was not all doom and gloom for Jets fans entirely. Young, talented quarterback Sam Darnold showed enough glimpses of what he can do to remain a top prospect. There were also other players who showed good enough form over the whole season to suggest that the Jets have a core of players to build with.

It did not take long for new interim GM Adam Gase to make his presence known, as he quickly traded former first round pick LB Darron Lee to the Kansas City Chiefs. All the Jets received in return was a 6th round pick in 2020. The Jets selected Lee in 2016 at #20 overall. He showed some progress in 2017 before starting 2018 with a big game against the Lions where he picked off two passes and return one of them for a touchdown. Lee ended last season with a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

    Jets fire GM Mike Maccagnan

The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan and appointed head coach Adam Gase as interim general manager. This is quite shocking and unexpected, even by the Jets standards. Maccagnan still had two years left on his contract and if the Jets ownership really wanted to change things around, they should have fired him together with Bowles right after the season. Maccagnan, however, was retained and allowed to run the draft and go after free agents. So, this move has all the signs of internal power struggle within the Jets organization.
