Jets put franchise tag on Marcus Maye

Admin - March 8, 2021

Marcus Maye's contract saga is getting postponed for at least one year, as the New York Jets have reportedly placed their franchise tag on the disgruntled free safety. While resigning Maye was a priority for the Gang Green this offseason, negotiations have recently reached an impasse. The franchise tag for a safety is estimated $10.5M, which will be Maye's guaranteed salary for 2021 unless the two sides can reach a long-term agreement by July 15th.

Maye, 28, was the Gang Green's best defensive player last season. He intercepted 2 passes, defended 11 passes, forced 2 fumbles and also had 2 sacks. The Jets drafted Maye in the second round of the 2017 Draft (#39th overall). He's had at least one interception in every NFL season, including a 104-yard return in 2018 against the Broncos and the "butt" interception against the Dolphins in 2020.
