Power rankings: Jets back at #29

Admin - January 5, 2022

The Jets are back to their consensus #29 position in the NFL power rankings after coming within 2 yards from upsetting defending Super Bowl champions last weekend. Zach Wilson arguably had his best game as a pro, completing 19 of 33 passes for 234 yards, 1 TD. Yahoo Sports ranked Robert Saleh's team as high as #27, while CBS Sports gave them the lowest ranking of 31. The remaining four websites were evenly split between #28 and #29. The Gang Green are 16.5-point underdogs in the season finale at Buffalo. The Bills will be crowned as AFC East champs if they beat the Jets.

Here's what different power rankings websites had to say about the Jets:

ESPN: The Jets, ranked 32nd in points and yards allowed, have surrendered a franchise-record 477 points. It's not a coaching issue, it's a talent issue. Consider: The previous high was 457, set last season with a completely different staff and scheme. Saleh, who made his bones as a defensive coach, needs help on all three levels, especially linebacker and safety. The Jets have four draft picks in the first two rounds. If at least two aren't on defense, there should be an investigation.

Sporting News: The Jets are getting some inspired and confident play late from Zach Wilson, which a nice nugget to carry into 2022 after a tough rebuilding season. Sharing a good game and birthday with Brady is cool, but the Jets are hoping he can tap more into his upside consistently as a sophomore.

CBS Sports: The good news is Zach Wilson is getting better. The bad news is they still blew a game late in losing to the Bucs.

ProFootballTalk: Best-case scenario for Week 17 = play the Bucs tough, but ultimately don’t blow the shot at the No. 3 pick.

Yahoo Sports: Had the Jets just picked up a fourth-and-2 with a little more than two minutes left, they'd have knocked off the Buccaneers. It wasn't the wrong call to go for it, and it ultimately isn't the worst thing they lost either. That performance, giving Tom Brady and the Bucs all they could handle, should inspire some confidence going into the offseason.

NFL.com: After it was over, the focus of Bucs 28, Jets 24 was on Antonio Brown’s antics, Tom Brady’s heroics, and a New York fourth-down play call gone horribly awry. But Jets fans should focus on the positives: Their undermanned team hung tough against the champs … and Zach Wilson is showing real progress in the season’s homestretch. The rookie QB is now making the “layups” (coach Robert Saleh’s term for routine throws), and his game tape on Sunday was dotted with several wow passes that showed off his improved rhythm and confidence.
