Power rankings: Jets drop again as Zach Wilson gets benched against Jags

Admin - December 28, 2022

It was quite a dreadful performance, even by Zach Wilson's standard, as the Jets lost 4th game in a row and dropped below .500 for the first time since Week 3. The Gang Green is now #17 in power rankings, their lowest position since Week 5. Despite the losing streak, the Jets still have a chance to make the playoffs. They have to win both remaining games and hope for New England to lose at least once. Mike White will be back behind the center against the Seattle Seahawks (7-8), who are also fighting for a playoff spot. The Jets are a 1.5-point favorite.

Here's what different power rankings websites had to say about the Jets:

ESPN: The Jets landed three impact players -- CB Sauce Gardner, WR Garrett Wilson and RB Breece Hall -- providing a foundation for the future. Wilson and Gardner could become only the second pair of teammates in the past 50-plus years to earn Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. The rookies have highlighted a wild campaign, one that has included a four-game losing streak (current), a four-game winning streak and four quarterbacks who've played. The fall of QB Zach Wilson also could be considered a defining storyline.

The Sporting News: The Jets' offense went into the tank against a shaky Jaguars run defense and blew a big chance to reboot their AFC wild-card chances. But it's now clear Zach Wilson isn't the answer at franchise QB, even in Year 2.

CBS Sports: They have Mike White back this week at Seattle, which is a good thing. The Zach Wilson situation might be coming to an end.

ProFootballTalk: Hit the road, Zach, and don’t you come back no more no more no more no more.

Yahoo Sports: Zach Wilson will be inactive Sunday, the second time this season he has been put at the bottom of the depth chart. It's getting harder to figure out what happens to Wilson from here. It's hard to imagine he could be the 2023 starter. Can he come back at all to the Jets?

NFL.com: Zach Wilson had the chance to silence doubters with a strong showing in prime time against the Jaguars. Instead, he authored a performance that could seal his fate with the organization. Wilson was dreadful in a 19-3 loss to the Jaguars, benched in favor of Chris Streveler, a fourth-string quarterback who had been on the practice squad days earlier. On Monday, it was reported Mike White (ribs) has been cleared by team doctors and will start Sunday's do-or-die road contest against the Seahawks. It's possible Wilson, who was benched for a second time this season, has already started his final game with the Jets.

USA Today: QB Mike White will be back in the lineup Sunday at Seattle ... and might just be the spark Gang Green needs to end its 12-year playoff absence – assuming New York can win out and New England drops a game.
